Gottfried Salzmann

Born in 1943, Gottfried Salzmann grew up near Salzburg. His relationship with painting began when he surprised his parents with a special Christmas wish: a book about painting. And since then, he dedicated himself to the art and is lauded internationally for his watercolor techniques and more.

Salzmann ’s art school credentials list the prestigious Academy of Visual Arts in Vienna from 1963 to 1965 and from 1965 to 1968, the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He has created an indelible mark in the world of visual arts by bringing together a unique language of visual expression. Besides his extraordinary use of watercolor which brought him to the attention of the art world, he has also simultaneously used different techniques creating bridges between watercolor, collage, photography and drawing.

It can be said that while his technique stuns the World, his method of translating his real observations into pieces of artistic beauty is what sets him aside. He has been celebrated widely and his work had won numerous awards and honored. Today he is a role model for many students of art and visual expression. After having lived in Austria and United States, today he lives and works in Paris and Vence, France.

Over the years, Salzmann has evolved to be an artist with an unprecedented deeper understanding of truth in reality and his body of work stands witness to the same. Mostly biographical and artistically expressed, Salzmann continues to weave stories of what he observed using recognizable iconography of the place and is constantly trying out new artistic disciplines. Lately he has been mixing photography with collage, acrylics with printed material and much more while maintaining the underlying constant of detailed and dazzling watercolor. His source material comes from the various cities in lives and absorbs, noting his observations with a camera that reflect untapped perspectives of the city. To properly understand the complete works of Gottfried Salzmann, one will most likely have to see each of his paintings as an expression of personal experience or perception. Salzmann creates poetic reflections of known, familiar spaces. It is beautiful.
